Meet the Dr.

In the mid 1980’s Ernst Loosen (pronounced low-zen), was preparing for a career in archeology when the family business called him home to the banks of the Mosel, Germany’s renowned wine region. Even though his family had been producing wines for over 200 years, Loosen took the time to hone his craft at Germany’s world-famous winemaking school in Geisenheim. Following his formal schooling, he visited and learned from great winemakers from regions throughout the world including Burgundy, Alsace, Austria and California.
Due to the lack of care and attention paid to the vineyards and cellar, Loosen became aware that he was inheriting many rows of vines well over 100 years old and a neglected cellar. He viewed this both as a challenge and an opportunity for a fresh canvas to develop his own style.
In 1995 Loosen and his brother, Thomas, developed a label, Dr. L, with fruit sourced from local growers of high quality. They were able to create a wine that represents all the characteristics of the great wines from the Middle Mosel at an amazing price.

Dr. L Sparkling Riesling
Dr. L Sparkling Riesling is 100% pure Riesling — the crisp, fruity grape that has made German wine famous for centuries. We make it using the Charmat method, where the second fermentation is done in a pressurized tank to keep the bubbles in the wine. This produces bright, clean sparkling wines in a more affordable way, which makes it possible to offer this charming bubbler at a very nice everyday price. $12.99

Estate Rieslings
These wines are blends of fruit from various estate-owned vineyards. They offer a more affordable representation of the classic taste from each soil type (red slate and blue slate).

Riesling Dry “Red Slate”
Dr. Loosen’s “Red Slate” Riesling is a dry counterpart to the classically fruity “Blue Slate” Kabinett. It is produced with fruit from estate-owned vineyards in the red slate soils in the villages of Erden and Ăśrzig. Farmed specifically for producing a dry wine, it is fermented with native yeasts in 3,000-liter, neutral oak casks.  Red Slate Riesling Dry has an intense minerality that is warm and enveloping, with a floral, spicy, citrus blossom aroma and a harmonious palate. $14.99
Riesling Kabinett “Blue Slate”
This estate-grown Riesling Kabinett showcases the mineral-driven style of the steep, blue slate vineyards in the middle Mosel. It comes from parcels owned by Dr. Loosen in the villages of Bernkastel, Graach and Wehlen, where the soil is pure blue slate. It is bright and vibrant with the classic white peach fruit and floral, flinty minerality. $19.99
