World-Class Wine from the World's Greatest Footballer

At the young age of 13, Lionel Messi and his family moved to Spain from their native Argentina when FC Barcelona recruited him to train at their youth academy, La Masia. It didn’t take long for Leo, as he preferred to be called, to move through the ranks and make his first professional appearance at the tender age of 16.

Currently in his ninth seasons as a pro, Leo has set many records and earned many honors in the soccer world, but arguably none are more prestigious than being the first international footballer to crack ESPN’s list of the Top 10 most popular favorite athletes in the US in 2013. With the World Cup just around the corner, Leo’s popularity will only grow.

What does all of this have to do with wine?

This year Valentin Bianchi has collaborated with the Leo Messi Foundation to create Leo Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina. Proceeds from this project will help children with social disadvantages improve their quality of life.

The Messi Foundation was created in 2007 to provide education and improved health care for disadvantaged children from around the world. In 2010 UNICEF named Leo a “good will ambassador” for the work his foundation is doing.
