Purple Turns to Gold
When Derek Benham and his brother Courtney sold the Merlot based brand Blackstone they went
their separate ways and Derek founded The Purple Wine Company. Like Blackstone the philosophy was to create brands based on a single grape variety. Mark West Pinot Noir was Purple’s anchor. Mark West was sold and it’s time once again for a new beginning.
Purple Wine has launched three new brands based on single grape varieties to compliment their already vibrant portfolio: Calista Pinot Noir, Flint & Steel Sauvignon Blanc,
and Raeburn Chardonnay.
Calista Pinot Noir Coastal Range
The Coast Range of California is a stretch of mountains that parallels the Pacific Ocean from Mendocino County in Northern California south some 400 miles to Santa Barbara in Southern California. This geologically young mountain system, known to native Californians as “The Great Coast Range”, includes distinctive Pinot Noir growing regions: Anderson Valley, Russian River Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands, and Santa Barbara. All sources for Calista.
The mythical Greek Goddess Calista was a huntress who possessed grace, seductive charm and strength above all rivals. Inspired by Calista, or “most beautiful” in Greek, this is an alluring wine that captures her essence drawn from the most exceptional Pinot Noir vineyards
The 2012 Calista Coast Range Pinot Noir is deep ruby red in color with aromatics of dried cherries, rose petal, violet and roasted coffee bean. Rhubarb, cherry and notes of cranberry flow through the palate to a balanced and lengthy finish of mixed dark fruit and black tea.
Flint & Steel Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley
Flint and Steel gets its name from the flinty mineral flavor component in the wine and the stainless steel tanks where it is fermented to maintain all the fresh flavors and characteristics
typical of Sauvignon Blanc.
The flinty component in Flint and Steel comes from vineyard in southern Napa Valley. Rocky soils and the cooling influence from San Pablo Bay are major contributors to these components.
A lovely nose of honeysuckle, peach and grapefruit rind is followed by flavors of mango, kiwi, lemongrass & freshly squeezed grapefruit. The wine is medium bodied with a smooth and refreshing finish. This is old school Sauvignon Blanc featuring stone fruit flavors and textures while downplaying the citrus.
Raeburn Chardonnay Russian River
The name Raeburn translates from Olde English translates to “the stream where one drinks.”
The Russian River Valley has become the quintessential California region for growing world class chardonnay. Volcanic soils and a cool climate offer the perfect combination.
75% of the fruit is fermented in new oak barrels lending toasty vanilla notes on top of the bright tropical fruit typical of the Russian River Valley.
This Russian River Chardonnay delivers aromas of ripe pear and apple. The use of French oak barrels offers toasty vanilla and Crème Brule.
